The Orfento Valley is the only canyon in the Majella to have a perennial watercourse which gives life to one of the most fascinating habitats of this massif. It is no coincidence that the Dipper was chosen as the symbol of the Reserve: a bird that lives precisely in this environment, feeding on the larvae of aquatic invertebrates, indicators of intact river environments, which it captures with spectacular underwater evolutions in the rushing waters. of mountain rivers.

The area is full of routes of different lengths and difficulties that allow you to practice trekking and excursions through spectacular canyons, woods and waterways where you can spend peaceful days surrounded by greenery and admire splendid landscapes.

With such a variety of different environments and landscapes, it is no wonder that the Orfento Valley has become, today, one of the most loved areas by hikers who explore the Majella Park. Inside the Reserve there is a complex network of paths which can be accessed from both sides of the mountain, and downstream, from the state road. The most popular of the valley’s hiking itineraries is the one that runs along the Sentiero delle Scalelle in a succession of little bridges and fences that allow you to follow the path of the river while admiring the rich riparian vegetation and the magnificent gorge carved out by the impetuous flow of the waters. The route starts from the “Paolo Barrasso” Visitor Center in Caramanico, where, through a gate, you access the path.
